Story
I am running the Reading half marathon to raise money to help make the elderly care wards at the Royal Berkshire Hospital become more dementia friendly.
It's estimated there are 670,000 people in England with dementia, with the numbers expected to double in the next 30 years. 42% of individuals over the age of 70 with unplanned admissions to hospital have dementia, rising to 48% in those aged over 80. We also know that people with dementia stay longer in hospital than those without.
Hospitals are a challenging environment for those with dementia it has been shown through improving the physical environment you can reduce the amount of anxiety, challenging behaviour and falls.
As part of a group we are wanting to be able to buy orientation boards for all five elderly care wards.
My aim is to complete the run in 2hrs 30. For me, it's quite a challenge not being a natural athlete. At school, I took extra maths lessons, to avoid having to do PE classes!
