Champions Walk for Peace
Campaign by Aegis (RCN 1082856)
Led by Kenya's champion athletes, the Walk for Peace aims to save lives, kickstarting a peacebuilding programme to break the cycle of ethnic violence in the Rift Valley - the birthplace of humanity.

Story

Running legend Haile Gebrselassie, who set 61 Ethiopian and 27 World records in his long career, securing major wins at distances ranging from 1500m to the marathon, is widely considered one of the greatest distance runners in history. Born in 1973, he first came to prominence with victories in the 5,000m and 10,000m races at the 1992 Junior World Championships in Seoul. He would go on to secure two Olympic golds and four men’s World Championships in the 10,000m. He also won the Berlin Marathon four times, breaking the World record there in 2008 – at the age of 35 – placing a time of 2:03:59. Only three runners have improved on that time since; one of them, Wilson Kipsang, being among the champions taking part in the Kenya Walk for Peace. Gebrselassie announced his retirement from competitive running less than two months ago. He will join the Kenyan champions during the final day of their walk on 6th August, for the closing few miles to the finish.
