Story
I decided to raise money for FORWARD (Foundation for Women's Health Research and Development) after I met the team in December 2011. They need all the help they can get because they really are making a difference. They are supporting so many young girls in the most deprived parts of Africa who otherwise, would have no one to support them.
I'm lucky not to have experienced any of the challenges these girls have and are still facing so I just want to make a contribution anyway I can.
This run will go specifically towards the child marriage programme in Tanzania.
Call to action on Child Mothers in Tanzania
“I was not aware of the marriage arrangements. My father and one of my uncles received bride price and arranged the marriage. I got to know it when the man came to my house and my father and uncle told me that the man you see here had paid bride price therefore this is your husband” - Child mother in Tanzania
This is a ‘call to action’ by FORWARD in support of work with Child mothers and child brides in Tanzania. Child marriage and teenage pregnancy is a major problem in Tanzania. More than 38 % of girls are married before 18 years; this number is more pronounced within rural areas. Child mothers are also more likely to die at child birth or suffer disabilities due to complications.
There are several factors and risks faced by young girls such as health implications, lack of education and employment opportunities, and psychological impact. . Many young girls drop out of school and fail to acquire basic education skills. They are less likely to have access to information on basic child development and parenting skill. Girls are also at risk of early sexual activity and pregnancy, increased infant and maternal deaths which can have severe consequences on a young girl’s reproductive health and right abuse. They also are at risk from domestic violence and have higher levels of HIV. With limited access to education and livelihood options, many girls become mothers early and risk further poverty and ill-health.
The Child Mother’s project in Tanzania works by supporting child mothers to increase their skills and knowledge of their rights, livelihood options and offers assistance in setting up networks which provide leadership training to help develop their skills in starting start small businesses, in addition to leadership training which enables child mothers programme classes in confidence building and provides them with the necessary parenting skills.
“…..child mothers suffer a lot as they are unable to take care of their children. They cannot feed them properly and don’t know when their children are sick or not, and as a result children can die” Child Mother in Tanzania
