Story
On the 10th and 11th of September, I attempted a full Decathlon at the UK Masters Championships. It was a huge personal challenge and I dedicated the effort going into the summer training and the competition to the Rays of Sunshine charity.
Rays of Sunshine Children's Charity exists to grant the wishes of children who are living with serious or life-threatening illnesses between the ages of 3-18 who live in the United Kingdom.
With your help they and their families can experience the joy and excitement of doing something they've only ever dreamt of before.
In the past I have rowed indoor marathons for Blue Cross and the Devon Air Ambulance and the support from everyone has been fantastic. This challenge was slightly different. It took two days to complete the Decathlon, but also required a heck of a lot of training before hand to get strong, fit and build endurance. I trained about 5-6 times a week after work to prepare for it.
I asked Olympic Heroes to set me targets for each event.
Daley Thompson has set a 4500 points total target.
Katherine Merry has set a 62 second target for 400m.
Heather Fell has set a 1500m target of 5 mins 10 secs.
Steve Smith has set a target of 1.60m in the High Jump.
Greg Rutherford has set a Long Jump target of 5.00m.
Jodie Williams set me a 100m target of 12.80s.
Kelly Sotherton has set me a target of 13.00m in the Shot.
Andy Turner has set me a target of 18.00s for 110m Hurdles.
