Some of you may already know how cancer has affected my family and my life as it does to so many others on a daily basis .

For those that don't, my first experience was losing my Grandad to cancer when I was just 14yrs old. The man that had been the core figure in my Family, had disappeared from my life forever.

In 1999, my wonderful Mother-in-Law, Rose, lost her battle with lung cancer shortly after the birth of my first son. I can not begin to describe the devastation and pain this caused and still does to this day.

In 2005, my Mum Barbara, was diagnosed with Breast cancer. Not being the type to ever give up, my Mum received treatment and underwent surgery to rid the disease. After receiving the news that her tests had come back all clear, we celebrated New Year like no other.

In March 2006, Mum had experienced a severe migraine for around two weeks and after consultation with a neurologist, she was readmitted to Mount Alvernia Hospital where she had received her previous treatment. My Dad and I were then told the devastating news that undetected cancer cells had entered into Mum's spinal fluid and this was effectively shutting her body down.

Just five days later, on the 28th March 2006, with her family around her, Mum fell asleep for the last time.

Cancer is a disease which affects virtually everyone and having the opportunity to raise money for such a wonderful charity is an honour in itself.
