Story
4 years ago my Mum was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Within 3 months she was quickly put on the most effective disease modifying drug that has enabled her to live a normal life and surprise almost everyone when they find out she has MS. Unfortunately not everyone is lucky enough to be put onto these new treatments and the treatments are not cures. The work of the MS Society has the aim to raise £100 million in 10 years which will all go towards ground breaking research with the goal of finding a cure and stopping MS. My mum has put in a lot of time to help this cause going to charity events and recently taking on a 70.7 mile walk along the wayfarers walk. It would mean a lot to me if I were able join her and help contribute to the MS Society's fundraising.
We are undertaking a challenge to climb Welsh mountains together on 6th October 2019, and summit five hundred times between us in order to support important charities.
We want to raise money for these charities by tackling eight peaks in the Brecon Beacons, following a ten-mile route over Corn Du (873m), Pen y Fan (886m), Cribyn (795m), Fan y Big (719m) and across the ridge along Bwlch y Ddwyallt (754m) and Waun Rydd (769m), descending via Carn Pica (750m) and Twyn Du (533m). With 2369 feet of ascent and 3304 feet of descent for all 80+ participants from the D Social community, this will be both logistically and physically challenging!
Given the Welsh weather in October, we do have a Plan B in place: it is a ten-mile route from the southern end of the Malvern Hills to the northern-most point, taking in seventeen hilltops each along the way. While the altitude is more modest, this would end up being well over 1000 summits.
If a Plan C is needed, then we shall endeavour to row on ergometer machines the full distance that we would have walked between us all (800 miles) on that day.
Whichever way we do it, we will work hard to repay your generosity, for which we and the charities we have chosen are very grateful
