WITH GREAT SADNESS

My handsome, kind hearted nephew sadly passed away on 3 May 2012. It was the most heart breaking experience that myself and Adam's immediate family / friends have had to go through and will be for a very long time, if not forever. Why? Because Adam was an amazing human being who left this earth way before his time. My nephew’s passing was shockingly sudden. We knew that it would happen one day but not so soon. I for one had convinced myself that it would be after he had carried the Olympic Torch and I had completed the three events listed below. The events below seemed irrelevant and unimportant after my nephew’s passing but I did my best to complete them in the memory of Adam Lewis and on behalf of the respective charities. It was especially hard due to the effect this had on my training as the first event was only six weeks after May 3. I’m not complaining because I’m still here unlike my brave nephew Adam.

My aim of raising £2,000 for The Sick Children’s Trust has been achieved and there is still more to come (outstanding sponsorship forms and collection pots etc). Thank you all so very much for your kind generosity. Adam only said a couple of weeks before he parted from this world that he couldn’t believe how much had been raised so far. I quickly told Adam that people have been donating for him and his story. Not for me, not for the charity but for him.

YOU DECIDE

Please can you consider visiting a new page that I have set up as per the wishes of my brother Kevin Lewis (Adam’s dad).

You can find my new page in the memory of Adam Lewis at www.justgiving.com/GarryLewisPACT. Please still feel free to donate to The Sick Children’s Trust as they are a wonderful charity and provide an amazing service but PACT (Parents Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia) have also been absolutely amazing during Adam’s life – they also very much deserve your full support. You might wish to split your contribution between both the charities. Thank you.

ORIGINAL DRAFT

I will be participating in the following cycling events for The Sick Children's Trust www.sickchildrenstrust.org This will take place from 17th June 2012 to 29th September 2012. The distance covered will total just over 550 miles.

The events I am participating in and why:

17th June 2012 - Wiggle Flatout in the Fens Sportive (154 miles) in Peterborough. http://bit.ly/zqkOUo (Please note that I have never ridden more than 100 miles in one go before)

21st July 2012 - Big G Grimpeurs des Wold Cyclosportive (100 miles) in Beverley, East Yorkshire. http://bit.ly/GzyufZ

26th to 29th September 2012 (4 days) - The SCT 30th Anniversary House to House Sponsored Cycle (over 300 miles) from London to Newcastle. http://bit.ly/AuQRNC

I will be cycling in three different events in the hope of raising a minimum of £2,000 which will go to The Sick Children’s Trust, a charity that provides a free, high quality ‘Home from Home’ accommodation for families with sick children. The money raised will be split between the charity as a whole and Treetop House, the particular house that some of my family stayed in during Adam’s treatment.

The idea came about after I learned that my nephew, Adam, had a brain tumor. Adam is only 12 years old and has been receiving treatment since March 2011. Before recognising what was wrong, Adam had been feeling sick, suffering from headaches and wasn’t able to keep his food down. He was given a CAT scan & MRI, where they identified the mass on his brain. Adam endured 10 hours in surgery, 30 sessions of radiotherapy from May until June 2011 and oral chemotherapy.

While Adam was being treated at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, his dad and partner were able to stay close by him with the help of The Sick Children’s Trust. In this case, the family stayed in Treetop House, a ‘Home from Home’ situated only a lift ride away from the wards for a couple of nights.

Even though I personally didn’t stay overnight at Treetop House, I did make a visit and was very impressed with the homely environment of the open plan lounge and kitchen area,” Throughout my visits to Sheffield Children’s Hospital I saw how stressed and upset the immediate families were on the high dependency wards. The Sick Children’s Trust’s houses help take away the stress of finding somewhere to live and allow families to be nearby their loved ones. They truly do have more than enough going on that stresses them out and The Sick Children’s Trust provides an escape from that.

I’m undertaking three events to help raise vital finds to keep the charity going. First, in Peterborough on 17June 2011, I will take on Flat Out on the Fens, the longest organised sportive bike ride in the UK, totaling 154 miles. Next, I will cycle my local Big G - Grimpeurs des Wolds Cyclosportive which starts and finishes in the historic market town of Beverley on 21 July 2011 and covers 100 miles over some of the toughest climbs in East Yorkshire which have previously been used in the National Road Race Championships. Finally, I will cycle for the charity’s own event, The Sick Children’s Trust 30 Anniversary House to House Cycle on 26 September 2012. This event takes place over four days, starting at the Stevenson House in East London. It takes me and my fellow participants across the country, stopping at every ‘Home from Home’ along the way allowing us to go inside each house to see for ourselves the support that is given to each family. The three of these events come together to make a total of over 550 miles cycled.

I am determined to raise money for The Sick Children’s Trust because they helped the people closest to me. For that I will be forever grateful. This cycle gives me the opportunity to see the work being done at all of the other houses first hand. I hope that everyone out there will get behind me and support me on my quest.

Adam is at home now with his parents and is able to enjoy the comforts of home whilst taking things slowly. Adam has recently been selected out of 200 schools in North Lincolnshire to carry the Olympic Torch in Warmswoth (Yorkshire and Humber Region) on 26 June 2012. A very proud moment indeed. http://l2012.cm/IEYmOe
