Story
I have signed up to this challenge (a mere 3 day trek across the Alps crossing France, Switzerland and Italy!) for a very personal reason: Some of my earliest memories are of my great-grandmother or ‘Little Nanny’ as we called her. When I was little she would call me by my mother's name, as in her mind, I was the girl she helped to raise whilst my grandparents were at work. She didn’t recognise my mother any more though, she was living with Dementia - in reality, we all were.
For 7 years I watched my grandmother care full-time with incredible patience and selflessness for her mother who grew increasingly confused and helpless, until sadly we lost her. Unfortunately, I know stories like ours aren't as uncommon as we'd like them to be, which brings into even greater focus the importance of the work the Alzheimer's Society does.
Going into this challenge I'm both incredibly nervous and excited. Training so far has also been 'interesting', including getting lost somewhere near Sheffield Pike in the Lakes, dragging reluctant friends and my very understanding husband out at the weekends for long walks, as well as an upcoming trip to Snowdon where I hope not to get lost!
Please dig deep to support this incredible cause and spur me on for what will be a the toughest challenge - physically and mentally - I've ever taken on!
For those who aren't familiar with the Alzheimer's Society: We are transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
The insurance industry is working together to help the Society and do all it can to beat dementia. Please support us with a donation.
