Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

As many of you already know, on the July 16th, I moved to South Africa to volunteer for 9 months. I am teaching literacy and numeracy for a bunch of amazing 6th graders here.

Right now I'm excited about an opportunity to help a few more amazing kids out by participating in a 5 day Charity Challenge! The challenge covers 2 aspects: the athletic challenge, and fundraising. I am part of a team that is traveling 350 km (217 mi) by way of cycling, running, hiking, kayaking, and sailing! There even is talk of a donkey ride (keep your fingers crossed). It will definitely be a challenge! In addition to this, each team member has a goal of raising $1200 (£750).

These funds will be used to create 2 new classrooms at the Ikhayalethemba orphanage and a new classroom at the Hope Centre. With your help, the lives of many children can have a positive impact. What's amazing is that the impact you have now will keep on growing, not just because of the number of children who benefit from this, but those kids can grow up to help enrich more people's lives. If you are able, and would like to leave an impact on these children's lives, please consider donating!

The plan in detail:

Friday 11th Nov - Day -1: Team travel to start point at Cape Agulhas

Saturday 12th Nov - Day 1: Cape Agulhas to Hermanus, 110km.

Sunday 13th Nov - Day 2: Hermanus to Gordon's Bay, 82km.

Monday 14th Nov - Day 3: Gordon's Bay to Fish Hoek, 55km.

Tuesday 15th Nov - Day 4: Fish Hoek to Cape Point return, 68km.

Wednesday 16th - Day 5: Fish Hoek to Kirstenbosch then up Table Mountain, 30km.

The challenge will be raising funds via the GVI Charitable Trust www.gvi.org, (GVI’s registered charity) to directly support two causes. Our Cape Town volunteers and staff work out of two bases, Gordon’s Bay and Fish Hoek, and each base has selected a project for the challenge to support. The Fish Hoek team have chosen to try and raise R15000 for the purchasing of a new container classroom at The Hope Centre in the Westlake community. The Gordon’s Bay team are also aiming for R15000 to convert two of the current buildings at Mama Lumka's Ikhayalethemba Village into classrooms for a new Grade R (Kindergarten) as part of the Village’s sustainability program.

The Hope funds will cover purchasing a converted shipping container and provide extras for turning it into a much more positive learning environment than the current classrooms. This would then leave the current classrooms to be converted into a set office and workspace for the Hope staff as well as proper organised storage which will allow us to invest in more vital resources.

The Ikhayalethemba Grade R is going to involve completely stripping the houses and removing and putting up walls to make the most of the space and allowing it to cope with the physical and educational needs of up to 30 children. The minimum figures will allow us to take on each of these projects but the more we can raise the better we can make the environments and in particular the education and physical development resources and equipment.

For more information on both of these hugely important projects please feel free to contact Victoria Mills at victoria.mills@gviworld.com
