On the 1st of March 2020, joined by 99 of my fellow colleagues from around the world, we set out for a 5 day, 100km (that’s a lot of miles in the US metric system) across Ecuador at an altitude of over 3000m (very high up in the air) for Postpartum Support International (PSI).
On a rather serious note, having a baby can be one of the happiest and most important events in a woman’s life. While life with a new baby can be thrilling and rewarding, it also can be isolating and stressful at times. Many new moms experience the baby blues – a mild, brief bout of depression – for a few days or weeks after giving birth. Up to 10% will experience depression or anxiety during pregnancy and 10-20% of new moms will experience a more severe form of depression – known as postpartum depression – that can interfere with daily life, prevent bonding with the baby. When the mental health of the mother is compromised, it affects the entire family. Studies show that untreated postpartum mental illness in the mom can have long lasting effects on the child, including cognitive and emotional development. Given those facts and it’s importance to our society, I have chosen PSI as my nonprofit organization. PSI’s mission is to promote awareness, prevention and treatment of mental health issues related to childbearing in every country worldwide.
Regardless if you are a mother, friend to a mother, married to a mother, or simply just know of a mother, with your generous help, we can help provide services to mothers during such an important time in their lives.
