Story
To raise at money for Variety the children's charity my friend and I have decided to follow the Chartist rising march.
The chartists set out on this march November 4th 1839 with the purpose of gaining the vote for all men over 21 as well as creating a more democratic political system in the UK.
The chartist marched for:
1. The vote for all men aged 21 and over-serious thought was given to campaigning for the vote for adult females but it
was decided that this was tactically unwise, and not all Chartists were as fully enlightened as we might like them to have been
2.Equal electoral districts - to help equalise the value of the vote across constituencies
3. Payment of MPs - to enable working men to stand
4. No property qualification for MPs
5. The secret ballot - at this time voting was a public act and poll books were printed which recorded how people voted
6. Annual parliaments - at this time a general election was required only once every seven years which was felt to
distance MPs from the people
On Saturday the 11th of May we will complete this 20-mile walk,
we aim to complete within 10 hours starting in Tredegar and ending in
Newport, stopping at chartist monuments along the way. We aim to raise awareness of the lack of political turnout in the UK as well as asking for sponsors towards the Variety children's charity.
This wonderful charity improves the lives of children and young people who are sick, disabled or disadvantaged. Variety provides coaches and bespoke wheelchairs, specialist, sensory and recreational equipment for use in the home, school, children’s hospitals and youth centres and creates memorable experiences through “Variety Great Days Out”.
We thank you for all your support and donations to this wonderful cause.
