Dementia is always one of those things that you are aware of, but you never think its going to ever affect you. However In reality, it now affects currently over 800,000 people in the UK which sadly now includes my wonderful father.
He was diagnosed with early stages of vascular dementia at the end of 2012, after twelve months of being what I can only describe as being on a rollercoaster ride. I remember the day that we received the final diagnosis and just feeling my heart sink in the reality that I was going to lose my lovely Dad. My Mom, brother and I all then went through a mixture of emotions, initially from sadness, to anger, to anguish, and then finally realising that we now had to start being positive for Dad, and making sure that we make the most of the time left so we can cherish the memories.
The future is still uncertain, but we are taking each day at a time. We know that eventually Dad will need full time care, and we are looking into the options, but he is still on good form and is able to interact in conversation about current affairs, politics and his favourite subject, football - he never misses Match of the day! He also knows that he and Mom will be celebrating 60 years of wedded bliss on 13th March this year.
I also have to say that after sharing my story with others, its amazing at how many other people are in the same situation with a member of their family. Being able to discuss the lows and highs with others has really helped me, and that's really spurred me on to raise money to help raise the awareness of Dementia and hopefully find a cure.
