On the 26th of June 2009 I received a call from my mother. Something in her tone when she said hello told me all was not well. She went on to tell me that my older brother, Andrew, had suffered a heart attack that morning, and that despite the best efforts of the local rapid response ambulance crew, they could not save him.
Andrew had been diagnosed the previous year with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. This is basically a swollen heart that can cause an irregular beat. He was attending hospital appointments whilst Doctors worked out the best course of action, but alas the condition took him before anything could be done. He left behind his wife, Tracey, and three young sons Ben, George and Tim. He was 44 years old.
On the 17th of April 2011 I shall be competing in the London Mararthon in order to raise funds for the Cardiomyopathy Association. Sponsoring my run will aid research into this condition, allowing treatments to be pushed through more quickly and lives saved. I know full well that times are hard. Believe me, any donations, large or small, shall be most gratefully received.
Thank you again for your support. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to get to the gym.
Warmest regards
Duncan
