VSO - ICS (Youth Volunteering) · 31 December 2015 ·

VSO is an international development organisation that brings people together to share skills, build capabilities, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all. Everyday, VSO volunteers are working to empower people living in some of the world’s most marginalised communities.

Story

Thanks so much for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!

As some of you may know, earlier this year I applied to the International Citizen Service (ICS) scheme, and to my astonishment have recieved a place to do 3 months volunteering abroad in Sierra Leone, West Africa!

It is expected that all volunteers raise £800 to confirm their place on the scheme and to ensure that the brilliant company who ICS work in partnership with (Voluntary Services Overseas) can continue with their great work and carry on sending passionate volunteers out to places where their help is most needed, so if you would like to donate, you have no idea how much it would be appreciated by not only myself but VSO too! Sponsoring me will enable myself and others in the future to make a valuable difference to one of the world's poorest countries, with the money going DIRECTLY to VSO to combat this.

Over the 12 weeks that I am in Sierra Leone, I will be a part of a group of volunteers from both the UK and Sierra Leone, working with the local communities to tackle issues that put a strain on their everyday lives. As Sierra Leone is a youth dominated country, much of our work will be surrounding the theme 'Youth Empowerment,' which will involve projects like improving employment prospects.

VSO also believes that volunteers should engage with the local community as far as possible, which means I'll be given a Host Home in Makeni with a counterpair from Sierra Leone, encouraging me to live life just like a native would and get involved in the culture as much as I can!

If you've read this far then I can only thank you enough, and hopefully you can see past the rambling (I can't help it!) and see how much taking part in this scheme would mean to me and more importantly, to the people I might be able to make the even the smallest difference too if I make it there. My fundraising so far has involved me taking part in 'Living Below the Line' where I lived on just £1 a day like 1.1 billion people in the world already do, and I am currently training to do the 5K South London Fun Run on Sat 8th September!

If you'd like to find out more, you can talk to me, or probably be better informed by watching this video from ICS
