Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

This year I have decided to walk the 105 miles of the Robin
Hood Way to raise money for research to develop a blood test to detect breast cancer early.

When I was eight, my father died, leaving my Mum with three young children to bring up. My Aunty Audrey, a lovely, warm, funny, intelligent woman was very important in helping to bring us up. She was a keen rambler, who introduced me to the joys of walking. It is now twenty four years since she died, in her mid-fifties from breast cancer. In 2008, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since my Aunt died, research has led to much more effective treatments. Today, 78% of women diagnosed with breast cancer survive at least 10 years. When my Aunt was diagnosed, this figure was only 48%.

Professor Robertson’s team at the University of Nottingham, are carrying out ground-breaking research to develop a blood test to detect breast cancer early. The test aims to detect breast cancer when it is too small to feel or to see on a mammogram, and when it can still be cured. So I am walking to raise money to support this research in memory of my Aunt and to help prevent other women from having to have surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and years of hormone and other treatments.

Why not join us on the walk? If you are interested in taking part in this sponsored walk, for one or more days (from 11th-17th June 2016), please email pam.pepper@nottingham.ac.uk for more information.
