Hi, my name is Debi Eastman and this is my story…

On 31st August 2009 our lives were shattered forever when my dad passed away from mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer which is usually caused by exposure to asbestos. My family and I were devastated and we were left in a state of shock. Until then we hadn’t even heard of mesothelioma and found it very hard to come to terms with (and still do) that a disease could take his life so suddenly and so cruelly.

Mesothelioma is a rare and extremely aggressive form of cancer and there is no cure. Prognosis isn’t good, usually only 18 months because symptoms don’t always show up until the late stages of the illness. My dad developed symptoms and after a series of tests to determine what was wrong he passed away only a couple of weeks later.

On the 21 Sept – 23 Sept 2012 I have set myself a personal challenge to climb 24 Peaks in 24 Hours. My challenge will take me to some of the most beautiful and most challenging peaks in the Lake District, such as Scafell Pike…even though my dad is no longer with us, I am sure he will be there with me, pulling me or pushing me up ‘them’ peaks!!

It would be very much appreciated if you could please help me raise the much needed funds for research and to help raise awareness of the dangers of asbestos. All money raised will go to help The June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund with their dedication to mesothelioma research.

The dangers of asbestos

Asbestos was widely used because of its heat and fireproofing properties. Due to the potential health hazards asbestos was banned in the UK in the mid 1980’s (it is still being mined and used in some parts of the world).

Asbestos was used for industrial, construction, automotive, maritime purposes as well as many things in and around the home. It was used in many products such as ovens, hairdryers, ironing boards, building materials, insulation, floor tiles, artex, brake pads and lining to name but a few. It was still being used in buildings built or refurbished up until 2000 (schools, houses, hospitals, offices). Due to popular DIY programmes more people are undertaking home improvements and are unknowingly being exposed to the dangers.
