Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On April 30th I fly to Peru where I'll ride my mountain bike from Machu Picchu across the Andes and down in to the Amazon Rainforest. Actually, having visited Machu Picchu, we start from Ollantaytambo and set off through The Sacred Valley of the Incas. There are eight of us going (plus guides and a support team) but I've not met any of the others yet.
The ride is almost 600km over 6 consecutive days. Away from the tourist trail, a support team will go ahead and set up bush camp each day. Camping will be basic but hopefully sufficient to keep us fed, rested and motivated.
The highest point we’ll reach will be the top of Hualla Hualla Pass at 4700m (15,420ft). We have a couple of days before starting the ride to help acclimatise to the altitude but I’m told to expect effects such as headaches and shortness of breath. I've never been anywhere close to this altitude before!
I am completely self-funding the trip but keen to blag some fundraising to help a worthy cause as this is by far the most difficult physical challenge I've ever attempted.
I've chosen to support The Brain Tumour Charity after losing my Dad to brain cancer in 2012 and I've watched friends lose a loved one way too early in life with the same cancer. More children and adults under the age of 40 die of a brain tumour than from any other cancer (which by no means makes any other cancer less awful for those affected). ALL donations go directly to the charity - every penny. Thanks.
