I'm Craig; my big brother Mark and I have never actually run the same race together. We tried last year, but a mini 'Beast from the East' overnight covered the Reading half-marathon course with deep snow and ice, so we woke up to the news the event was cancelled.
This year, we are going to do it, come hell or high water! Instead of frost-covered ground, we may instead be basking in 21°C sunshine, so who knows.
With less than 3 weeks to go, training has been difficult for both of us - so we are not expecting to break any records. The aim is simply to get round the thing, vaguely intact.
My employer, the Federation of Small Businesses, chose the Rainbow Trust as its Chairman's Charity this year. Having seen what they do we've decided to use our first race together to also raise a bit of money for them.
The trust is AMAZING - helping families who have a child with a life threatening illness. Just 1 hour of brilliant care is enough time to entertain a seriously ill child, so that their parents can have a break without feeling guilty. Here's a video about what they do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=or73mf8T8ms&t=7s
Mark and I were lucky to be healthy kids (with highly questionable taste in clothing, admittedly, as above) so it's good to use our 1st race together to raise a bit of cash to help those less lucky. It'll also motivate us as we try to get to that horrific 21km marker at the end.
The aim is to raise £300 or so. Thanks for any donation, however small.
