It is with Clan in mind that myself and some friends decided that we should do something to try and raise some funds for the charity. We wanted to do something that was both physically and mentally challenging as dealing with cancer is also physically and mentally challenging.
We are going to use 3 crews of 6 people - 6 from Orkney and 12 from Shetland- to row a 28 foot wooden rowing boat across the North Atlantic from Shetland Isles to the Faroe Isles. The distance will be about 200 miles and will take around 50 odd hours to complete. We will be rowing for 2 hours and resting for 4 hours. It is our belief that in modern times this stretch of water has not been crossed with a rowing boat. Also on the approach to the Faroes we will have some strong tides to contend with, this will make the last section of the row even more demanding. The most unpredictable part of our rowing challenge is the weather. We know the row is going to take place in the summer of 2011, probably June or July. We will have 3 " weather watchers" and when all 3 give us a thumbs up on a suitable weather window, we have to basically stop what we are doing, get ourselves to the departure point in Shetland ( a boat journey or a flight for the Orcadian contingent ) and start rowing. This proves the commitment from the rowers and a high level of understanding from their employers.
Over the coming months we will be holding various fund raising events including a prize draw and an auction.
