In October 2013, I will be taking part in the Clipper Round the World Race. The Clipper Round the World Race takes place every two years and is the only round the world yacht race open to non-professional crew. The race is the longest ocean race in the world, covering 40,000 miles and 6 continents, stopping in 15 ports along the way and taking almost a year to complete!

I am signed up for four Legs, from the South Africa to San Francisco via Australia, Singapore and China, which will cover over 26,000 miles and take around 6 months to complete. All this takes place on a 70 foot yacht which has been built for speed, not comfort! There will be 21 people living and working together in a confined area will be a challenge in itself – there is no getting off the boat in the middle of the ocean if things get tough and no shops to go to if you run out of something.

I am using this opportunity to raise money for MindWise, a charity based within Northern Ireland that works to support those at risk of, and affected by, severe mental illness and mental health difficulties.
