Chris and Sarah have entered the iconic Megavalanche mountain bike race in Alpe d'Huez in July 2012. This is a huge challenge for which they are already preparing....
For those that have not heard of the Megavalanche, it is THE mountain bike race on the world calendar, involving a mass start down hill course between 15 and 25 km long with 2,000–3,000 m vertical descent. Starting on a high alpine glacier, the first part of the race will be on snow, where hundreds of riders jostle for position, trying to get to the front of the pack before the long singletrack and technical riding that covers the middle and lower sections.
The Mega is neither a cross-country or down hill race, but a real discipline of its own. Riders from many different riding backgrounds will be on the same line, on equal terms. Some hoping to use their athletic power and endurance and others their technical down hill skills. There has never been a race more fitting for the modern mountain biker.
Chris and Sarah have chosen to support the Hampshire and IOW Air Ambulance as they have first hand experience of their services, when they rescued Chris following a very serious biking crash about 4 years ago. The professionalism, skill and care of the Air Ambulance team was second to none. Surprisingly, the Air Ambulance does not receive any Government funding and is funded purely by the community. It seems very fitting to support them for this challenge.
