The CARTEN100 cycle ride takes place roughly over a ten hour period as we take a leisurely ride from Cardiff to Tenby. While the main aim is to get people on their bikes, a benefit of the day is the money raised for charity. This is done in from direct sponsorship for company logos on the cycling shirts and the CARTENers getting sponsored individually.
Well that was a lovely day for a leisurely ride to Tenby NOT!
Left the house (Penarth) cycling to the start (Cardiff City Stadium) for 7.30 start. Off and running in two large groups out of Cardiff, up to Culverhouse cross and on to the first stop at the Twelve nights in Margam, arrived at 9.30am (30 miles completed.) Feeling relatively ok!
Upon crossing the old M4 bridge, hit torrential rain and severe wind all of Fabian Way into Swansea, then sun and small patch of blue sky, easily missed cycle track (Clyne Gardens) took us up past Trostre steel works and onto second ride of death (Millennium coast path) ended up going backwards on numerous occasions!!!! (Definitely feeling it now!!!)
Reached next refuelling station (Burry Port – The Ship Pub) at 61 miles, legs very tired, soaked to the skin, considering exit strategy! After two bananas’, two nut bars, assorted gels, and fructose drinks started off again.
Start of the various hill climbs, up from Kidwelly leading down to A48 over to Carmarthen, then onto first de-tour (12 miles) cross country coming out at St Clears, eek still so far to go, onto the final stop 2 miles on from the now closed Sporting Chance (The Alpha Inn, Tafarnspite) with 93 miles completed, I don’t sit down as won’t get up again, serious leg cramps, plus still wet and cold and the wind has picked up again!
Off again onto the final leg (part of the Ironman route) and this is now becoming hell, as wind if pushing the pace to a crawl and a couple of more inclines before Stepaside, then onto the dual carriageway before the sign post (finally) for Tenby and the last 5 miles in!
