Last year in London a poet called Jacqueline Saphra organised a Poem-a-thon; 60 poets reading in relay for 8 minutes each for a whole day-raising an incredible £20,000. 

A small group of poets, led by Sally Goldsmith have set up a similar event in Sheffield, to raise money for ASSIST, who support asylum seekers here in Sheffield. 

£5 could cover expenses for a weekend's hospitality for an asylum seeker in need of somewhere to sleep

£17 could cover travel expenses to enable an asylum seeker to get to medical and legal appointments.

£20 could give a vulnerable asylum seeker a week's ASSIST to enable them to buy some food. 

We are all painfully aware of the desperate plight of so many people having to leave their home countries, making treacherous journeys to the UK and other  places in Europe seeking  safety and welcome. Please sponsor me or any of the other poets in the team to help us do our bit to make a difference.

The event takes place on Saturday 2nd April at the Art House in Backfields in the city centre. There is a cafe at the venue, entry is free and there will be a bookstall, a tombola with great prizes, tea, coffee and cakes. Any cash raised through sales on the day will go to charities supporting refugees in Northern France. Please come to the event  not only to hear fantastic poets but to support such an important cause...if you can attend or donate, I and the other poets involved wil be incredibly grateful for your help, however small...
