Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I have, for some reason, which I still haven't quite worked out why,  signed up to sail in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Races, 5th leg from Airlie Beach in Australia to Zhuhai in China, stopping off in Sanya in China and Subic Bay in the Philippines.

The Clipper Round the World race runs for 11 months around the planet in a matched fleet of 11 identical 70’ Ocean racing yachts. They are really fast (over 30 knots surfing), beautiful and exactly what I’ve dreamed about. Contrasted with the Volvo Ocean Race (all world class professional sailors), all Clipper participants are amateurs like me sharing the dream, the spirit of adventure and looking to go way beyond the comfort zone (where all the best things happen)! All Clipper race crew must complete 4 weeks of intense training before getting the green light to race.

The 42,000 mile race around the planet is divided into 8 legs, crosses 5 oceans, visits 6 continents and it takes 11 months to complete. Each yacht has a highly experienced professional Skipper and a 1st mate. Our team is called Dare to Lead and our Skipper is an awesome Englishman and veteran ocean racer named Guy Waites. Our first mate is an amazing and skilled young Frenchman named Hugues Stellio.

Some racers go all the way around the world and some like me sail on one or more legs. I’ll be sailing on Legs 5. I get on board in January in Airlie Beach and finish in Zhuhai in early March, I will sail approximately 5550 nautical miles, potentially experiencing, freak squalls, the Doldrums, pirates and huge Chinese fishing fleets (and probably scurvy)!

Many of you are already following the Clipper race and the exciting adventure that lies ahead. For those who are interested you can follow our race on Facebook Dare To Lead 2019-20 Supporters. There will be lots of coverage, Crew blogs about daily life on the boat, photos, videos and even a race viewer that lets you track each boat’s position on an hourly basis on race viewer below.

So please give as generously as you can, it is for a great cause.
