Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I'm Alex Waring, I'm 19 and I'm from Halewood, in Liverpool.
I have Duchene muscular dystrophy, a degenerative condition that has left me a permanent wheelchair user.
I desperately need a new sports wheelchair as I've grown out of the one that I use to play wheelchair football.
Two of Liverpool Football Clubs greatest ever players are
backing my appeal to raise the funds that I need.
Alan Kennedy and Mark Lawrenson are urging the public to support my appeal.
I started playing wheelchair football when I was 10 and since then I've done quite well in the sport and I play for Greenbank Powerchair Football Club, in the Northwest Regional League.
Despite having to borrow a spare sports wheelchair from the club I love playing the game.
I like all sports but football is by far my favourite and I'm a massive Liverpool fan. Vergil van Dijk is my favourite player, but
I also have huge respect for Jurgen Klopp.
I love sport and football so much that I'm even doing a
Disability Sports Coaching degree at Liverpool John Moores University.”
However, without a new wheelchair that fits my physique I'm playing at a disadvantage to my teammates and opponents. To improve as a player you need a sports wheelchair that fits you perfectly.
You need to be able to sit securely in the chair and it has to be a
model that has maximum speed and mobility around the pitch.
Without a powered wheelchair that’s built to my specifications I will struggle to develop further in the game.
Having researched which sports wheelchair would best suit
my needs I realised that there was a significant financial barrier to buying the equipment.
The most suitable chair for me costs a whopping £5,520, As you can imagine that’s way beyond my budget.
It’s heart-breaking knowing that I can’t afford to buy a
chair that would allow me to continue playing the sport that I enjoy so
much, and I don’t want him to have to give up the game.
I was totally amazed when I was told that two Liverpool legends, Alan Kennedy and Mark Lawrenson, were going to add their support to the appeal because of their Liverpool connections.
Alan scored the winning goal in both the 1981 and 1984 European Cup finals and he is delighted to get involved in the campaign. This is what he said: “Even at my age I still enjoy playing 5-a-side every week and I’ve
also taken up walking football, which is great fun.
“Once we get back to some sort of normality, after the pandemic,
I’ll be back playing and I hope Alex will be to.
“To be with your friends, being competitive, is great for the body and mind and I hope people support Alex, and help him get the
powerchair that he needs to continue playing the game that he so obviously loves.”
How amazing is that!
I hope the that the public, the business community, and other funders will give me a helping hand in raising the money that I need. I know it’s an awful lot of money but with their support I can continue to develop in the game.
Thank you!
