Story
My name is Cameron Docherty and I am currently a student on the Junior Leaders 17 course.
As a part of the course myself and the rest of the students are required to plan and carry out a fundraising activity- for this I have chosen to do a tandem skydive from 15,000ft at Skydive Hibaldstow in North Lincolnshire, which is currently the highest skydive in the UK.
I will be completing this challenge in the early months of 2016 in order to raise money for The John Thornton Young Achiever's Foundation (JTYAF), with the intent of raising a minimum of £300.
What is the JTYAF? 'The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) supports young people in a wide range of youth organisations and provides them with scholarships to support their personal development and the pursuit of their ambitions'. For more information please visit www.jtyaf.org.
The JTYAF was set up to honour John Thornton, an ex- Air Cadet who completed the Junior Leaders course and graduated as top student, inspiring a number of his fellow Ferndown cadets to apply for and succeed on what has become known as the Air Cadet Organisation’s toughest course. He then went on to complete his dream of becoming a Royal Marines Officer, commissioning in 2004. He was subsequently appointed to serve with 40 Commando Royal Marines in January 2007 and was “thrilled at the prospect of leading Marines on operations.” He deployed to Afghanistan in September 2007 in command of Charlie Company’s Fire Support Group and it was in this role that he excelled throughout Op HERRICK 7, until he was tragically killed 2 weeks away from coming home safely.
The JTYAF was set up by his parents to help support young people achieve their dreams just like John had. 'Whatever their dream, we hope to help them achieve it'.
Please give generously to this deserving cause!
