Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page in memory of Caesar.

Dog for the Disabled, Caesar
Golden Retriever        25/6/99 - 7.45pm 10/1/10

Registered Assistance Dog partnered with Wendy Morrell of Dorset, England for 9 years one month.

Passed away following a sudden illness which overcame him in a matter of hours.

A joyful and dignified soul who touched the hearts of everyone he met around the world.

A 17 month old Golden Retriever bounced into my life on December 7th 2000, several years after I had received a severe brain injury in a sports accident. Rebuilding my life had been really difficult and real progress only started after Caesar arrived. Slowly, as we began to trust eachother, our world got bigger, all the time together we'd pop our toes outside the comfort zone, and together we found freedom.

Caesar took his work as an assistance dog very seriously and was always ready to help; but he never lost his love of the outdoors and was just as capable of coming home black as any dog!

Caesar was a joyful soul and always had a cuddle to spare - he certainly knew instinctively how to work a room :o)

Over the years he has gotten me out of some very sticky situations; he once chased away a naked masked man who assualted me, he would fetch and carry for my Dad while he was poorly and staying with us, he was self taught in alerting to my epileptic seizures and intuitively knew when my friend Karen was unwell. Caesars' alerts were the inspiration of her getting her own assistance dog.

No matter how much I write here, I will never be able to explain what a terrific assistance dog and friend Caesar was ... he was one of those dogs where to know him was to love him.

He opened up my world and gave me my life back, for which I cannot thank him enough.

Caesar passed away very suddenly on January 10th 2010, following a very short illness, he had been working and out playing in the snow a matter of hours before he collapsed needing hospitalisation.

Even at ten and a half, he was very much enjoying his life and work, which is why such a sudden departure has left me absoutely devastated.

Naturally, our story of the passing away of an assistance dog is not unique and Dogs for the Disabled are in the sad position of training successor dogs for people like me several times a year ... in addition to meeting the needs of new clients coming to the charity, so anything you can donate to help them continue this essential work will be very appreciatively received.
