Story
CMT United Kingdom has been funding a Young People's Event for many years to provide much needed support for Kids growing up with CMT. Since 1991, the year of the first weekend, the event has evolved into an incredibly important activity weekend, where teenagers with CMT from all over the country can experience all kinds of activities that normally they couldn't hope to do.
CMT - or properly known as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease - is a neurological condition affecting the nerves to the arms and legs, and consequently causing muscle weakness in the extremities. The severity can vary hugely between individuals. The condition is hereditary, it's slowly progressive, and currently there is no cure, although keeping mobile, using splints, occasionally surgery, can all help keep the worst of the problems at bay. Obviously, for kids with any disability, coming to terms with the knowledge that this thing is for life is very, very hard - but not for our wonderful CMT Kids!
The Kids who come on our weekend gain in self-esteem, confidence and general wellbeing by succeeding in climbing to the top of the climbing wall, cycled 2 miles, canoeing, orienteering, caving.... you name it, the kids try and succeed at it all! The event is usually based at the Calvert Trust Centre in Keswick in the Lake District.
The organisation funds this event through the fantastic help of our supporters, who have done the Three Peaks Challenged, walked Hadrians Wall, done parachute drops and much more....
Now, the kids want to "give back" to the organisation by setting a major challenge for themselves - canoeing the length of Thirlmere and cycling back - a serious challenge for kids with CMT! The aim of the event is two-fold.... to raise a SERIOUS amount of money, and to raise awareness of CMT and of CMT United Kingdom!
Please dig deep - the Kids need your support.
