Story
Thanks for visiting my just giving page for Macmillan Cancer Support. I hope that you will be able to support this charity as they do such valuable work to help cancer patients and their families. Cancer affects so many lives and any amount you can donate will go a long way to making a positive affect.
I have two wonderful children, who are a great inspiration to me. The youngest has a rare condition and has spent a great deal of his life visiting Great Ormond Street for surgery and outpatient appointments. This has and continues to have a huge impact on our life as a family and our daily living.
When my son was two I started to feel unwell, as a full-time carer and mummy the demands of looking after a child with multidisciplinary needs can be exhausting. I found I had a couple of minor health problems that could be easily remedied with surgery and alongside this I found a lump in my breast. Sadly that lump resulted in a diagnosis of breast cancer that had spread to my lymph nodes. After two lots of surgery and a grueling six months of chemotherapy the most amazing team of surgeons, oncologists and nurses at Stoke Mandeville Hospital helped me back to full health.
It was an incredibly difficult time for all our family and friends alike. Of course, nothing can ever prepare you for the diagnosis of cancer and the uncertainty of the outcome. I like to think of myself as a positive person, but undeniably the very nature of the disease and treatment can bring dark days filled with fear, wondering if you will see your child’s next birthday or will I make it to Christmas?
Thankfully, Macmillan offered lots of help, advice and support to my family and I. They really helped! That’s why I have decided to take on this cycling challenge from London to Paris, to raise money for a cause that is close to my heart. I really felt compelled to give something back in hope that it will help other families going through similar situations.
I have enjoyed cycling for years and after my treatment had finished my cycle buddies helped me back to fitness. They were all so patient, there were days when I just didn’t have it in me and they slowed it down, they’ve climbed hills with me and encouraged me every step of the way. Pretty much the same as all my friends and family, I am really fortunate to know such amazing people that have truly helped me through some tough times, like sunshine on a rainy day, you know who you are and I love you all!
