Blue is providing innovative solutions to over fishing – the largest problem facing the world's oceans, 90% of large fish are already gone - and enabling the creation of marine reserves. Currently working on projects across 13 global locations, from Lyme Bay in Dorset, the Turneffe Atoll in Belize and the Cyclades in Greece. BLUE’s aim is to put at least 10% of ocean under protection by 2020 and 30% by 2030.
£100 could help to develop guidance on ‘best practice’ for the recreational yachting industry around the Aeolian Islands including waste disposal, non destructive anchoring and respecting MPA boundaries and regulations.
£20 will contribute towards workshops promoting non-destructive fishing methods and highlight over exploitation of particular species in the Aeolian Islands.
£30 helps us to raise awareness of Ascension Island’s waters which are described as a ‘hope spot’ with huge marine biodiversity;
£50 could provide education and awareness programmes promoting the benefits of MPAs around the Aeolian Islands to local stakeholders;
£80 will go towards scientific expeditions to prove the importance of protecting Ascension’s wildlife.
Why the Oceans?
- Water makes up 72% of the world's surface, the
oceans account for 97% of this. - Its estimated 50 - 70% of our oxygen comes from the
ocean. That’s more than all of the world’s rain forests combined. - The ocean is the primary source of protein for more
than 1 billion people round the world and growing - we need to make this sustainable
