Story
Each year a different official charity is selected to receive the sponsorship money raised by Chariots of Fire.
This year, the event is being held in support of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), who support families and care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk.
EACH tailor their care and support to the needs of all family members and ensure care is delivered where the families wish – in their own home, at hospital, in the community or at one of the charity’s three hospices in Milton, Ipswich and Quidenham.
In 2014, the charity celebrated their 25th year at Milton, which was opened on August 1, 1989, by Diana Princess of Wales. At the time of opening it was one of only four children’s hospices in the UK. 25 years on and there are more than 50 children’s hospice services across the UK, and EACH remains at the forefront of care service delivery.
EACH is a leader in specialist care and delivers a wide range of services, including:
• Day care in the family home, hospice or both
• Overnight breaks in the hospice, including families to stay if they wish
• Emotional and wellbeing support for the children & young people, siblings, parents & carers and extended family & friends
• Symptom management support and advice
• Emergency 24-hour telephone support
• Therapies – music, occupational, hydro and physio
• Specialist play
• Spiritual care
• Care at end of life and bereavement support.
For both families accessing care, and those who have been bereaved, EACH is a lifeline at an unimaginably difficult time. They rely on voluntary donations for the majority of their income and need to raise almost £6 million to deliver services this year – £16,000 a day, every day of the year.
What will your money fund?
EACH has set every team entering the challenge of raising a minimum £400…
The Chariots of Fire event will help fund the EACH True Colours Symptom Management Team; a team of specialist nurses who work closely with families, children, young people offering a high quality symptom management service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The team aims to ensure all life-threatened children, young people and their families living in Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk, have access to vital support and advice when they need it most.
They provide families with choices to manage their child or young person’s healthcare needs and symptoms, in a place of their choosing and work with families and local care professionals to develop individual symptom management plans.
The team facilitates access to specialist medical advice and psychological care, anticipatory symptom management and prescribing and care planning.
EACH relies on voluntary donations for the majority of their income.
Help them reach this fantastic goal!
