The Fragile X Society is the only charity dedicated to individuals and families living with Fragile X syndrome - the most common cause of inherited learning disability. We are continually working to improve the quality of life for all people impacted by Fragile X.

Story

On 29th September I completed an 800m/40km/8km triathlon is 3hours and 19minutes, in order to raise money for the Fragile X Society. Fragile X Syndrome is the most common inherited cause of Intellectual Disability, affecting around 1/3600 boys and 1/6000 girls. Individuals with the full-mutation often experience difficulties with social anxiety, and ADHD-like traits: it has been described as "autism with bells on". Furthermore, around 1/800 males and 1/250 females are carriers of the fragile X premutation and may experience problems difficulties during aging, such as premature menopause (Fragile X Premature Ovarian Failiure) and Fragile X Tremor Ataxia Syndrome (which causes tremor and cognitive decline in old age).

The Fragile X Society do amazing work to support families affected by Fragile X : through employing family support workers, disseminating information and promoting research into the disorders. Also, despite the relatively high prevalence of this disorder, there is very little awareness of it. Therefore the charity is constantly trying to increase public and professional knowledge about the disorder- a mission that I hope I helped out with by parading around in a society bib!
