Story
6 swimmers, a minimum of 21 miles, with no wetsuits in 15 degree water....... "The Everest of swimming"
Our team, of Lt Col Will Strickland, Major Edward Boag, Captain Sian Mayor, Lieutenant James Keir, WO2 Gavin Petrie and Miss Nicola Mackay, are currently training to swim the English Channel in July this year.
We all work at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate where the Army trains and educates its soldiers of the future for the Army's various Corps and Regiments. We have chosen to raise money for ABF The Soldiers' Charity as those who serve in the military, and their loved ones, may need the help of the ABF in the future- an inspirational charity for our Junior Soldiers.
As well as spending numerous hours in the pool each week, we are subject to circuit training sessions with our Army Physical Training Instructors each week- enough to make anyone ache we can assure you! We are also taking part in numerous training events:
- Fundraising at the Hydro in Harrogate, swimming the Channel distance along with Junior Soldiers on Wednesday 13th April
- Sea swimming training in Jersey. A chance to practice in varying conditions with the mantra of 'train hard, fight easy'. This means night swimming, swimming in kelp and seaweed and swimming in the roughest conditions we can find
- Great North Swim in Windermere
Please support ABF The Soldiers' Charity- it is the national charity of the British Soldier and provides much-needed funds to support the work of other service charities. This allows them to provide a lifetime of support to soldiers, veterans and their families.
