Story
I have decided to take on this challenge because one of my colleagues, Manoj Thakrar from ING London, has a 4 year old boy called Shiv, who was recently diagnosed with a horrible muscles wasting condition called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Manoj and his family have decided to fight to help find a cure in time to save Shiv’s life. In January this year, they set up a campaign; Smile-with-Shiv, to raise awareness and vital funds to go into research, help find a cure, and work with the national charity Muscular Dystrophy UK. You can visit their web site for more details at www.smilewithshiv.org
I have decided to help by cycling for the Prudential London – Surrey 100 miles cycle ride on Sunday 2nd August 2015 and raise much needed vital funds. Please help support me for this great cause !
The condition:
Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a 100% fatal condition affecting 1 in 3,500 boys and there are approximately 100 boys born in the UK each year with Duchenne. This condition means the body cannot produce enough dystrophin, a protein needed for the muscles to grow and repair. The muscles become weaker over time and boys with Duchenne lose the ability to walk as they reach their early teens and lose the ability to move their upper body by mid-teens. This devastating condition also leads to breathing and heart complications which means boys like Shiv do not usually live beyond their twenties. Currently, there is NO CURE.
