Story
This year, I'm taking part in Armpits4August 2013, in aid of Verity, a charity who provide a support group for people who live with PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).This is a genetic disorder that, in massively over-simplified terms, means that those affected have an imbalance of the male hormone testosterone, which causes reduced fertility, irregular periods, insulin resistance and excess excess growth of body hair. 'As you can imagine, in a society with narrow ideas of female beauty, these symptoms mean PCOS sufferers not only have to cope with the disorder itself, but with judgments on their appearance, or the ridiculous idea that the symptoms mean they aren't 'real women'(whatever one of those is).'
So, the short version is that I'm raising money for two reasons;
1/To raise money for a charity that do good work for those affected by PCOS.
2/To raise awareness of the disorder in my own, small way, and add to a more critical discussion in the mainstream about what 'beauty' really means for a woman.
Please donate what you can - My goal is pretty modest, but if you can donate £2.50 or more, I'd be grateful. If I get more than £50.00, I will dye my armpit hair an interesting colour, and yes, there will be pictures! Let me know if you want to see pictures of my progress here as well!
