Fundraising for Wallace & Gromit's Grand Appeal
The Grand Appeal was one of many charities that gave truly amazing support to our friends, the Browns, while their son, Oliver, was receiving critical treatment at Bristol Children's Hospital.
Along with Oliver's dad, Mike, I'll be cycling 400+ km from Land’s End to Bristol Children’s Hospital and taking part in an overnight 100 km road cycling event in Bristol on 6/7 July 2019 to raise funds and help The Grand Appeal to continue to support families like the Browns.
The Grand Appeal
The Grand Appeal supports Bristol Children’s Hospital by funding pioneering, life-saving equipment and research, including ventilators, a cardiac hybrid theatre and an inter-operative MRI scanner, so that patients have access to the best possible healthcare and life-saving equipment.
They also provide free accommodation to families of critically ill patients from the Neonatal and Paediatric Intensive Care Units in the Cots for Tots House and Paul’s House, as well as providing a free family support service for parents and siblings. They ensure the hospital is a vibrant and child-friendly place to help distract sick children through music therapy, art and play programmes and much more.
Bristol Children’s Hospital covers the largest geographic area of any children’s hospital in England, treating more than 100,000 children each year, and serves as the paediatric intensive care centre for the whole South West region. The hospital is an international, national and regional specialist centre of excellence for a range of services including neurosurgery, burns, epilepsy, cardiac, leukaemia and bone marrow transplants.
Every year, on average 130 children are diagnosed with a form of cancer within the South West, and patients come to Bristol for both inpatient and outpatient treatment and support. The Unit receives patients from across the UK and cares for over 370 day-patients and around 300 inpatients every year.
The Children’s Cancer Unit at Bristol Children's Hospital is internationally renowned for the treatment of childhood cancer and leukaemia, and pioneering related bone marrow transplants. The unit is recognised nationally as a centre of excellence, treating children on a local, regional, national and international scale.
The Grand Appeal has supported the Unit for over 15 years, providing funding for equipment, play staff, artworks and new medical facilities.
