The walk will take place in May 2011 starting at St Bees on the 8th May and hopefully finishing at Robin Hoods Bay on the 20th May.
The RNLI has always meant something special to me. During the early 50s my Uncle (Eric Taylor) was Coxswain of the Whitby lifeboat `Mary Ann Hepworth' and earned a bronze medal for bravery and seamanship.
During the 60s I served in The Merchant Navy and on one occasion after my ship had been damaged in a storm in the North Atlantic we requested the south coast lifeboats to stand by as we sailed up the English Channel in gale force conditions to the the river Medway. My ship of 4000 tons was listing and we made slow headway but the lifeboats were brilliant standing by in what must have been to them appaling conditions.
I find I have time now to thank these brave people and this remarkable charity for their work and the C2C (Sea to Sea) or Coast to Coast walk seems the most appropriate way of doing this.
