I am taking on a challenge of a lifetime to MOUNT EVEREST BASE CAMP! If you’re wondering why, read on...
Most recently, we have seen a glimpse of the genocide and torture taking place against Rohingya refugees; images of thousands being forced to leave their torched villages. Horrific video interviews of victims who have experienced or witnessed abuse, rape or child murder have become commonplace on social media. It has become the world’s fasted growing refugee crisis and the UN has described the abuse as ‘A crime against humanity’.
The constant influx of images and videos means it’s easy to become detached- we read it - we feel guilty - we move on. It has become easy for us to scroll past and carry on with our perfect, ordinary lives hoping that somebody else will deal with it. Sick of constantly feeling helpless I have finally taken the plunge to raise £4,500 by trekking to the tallest mountain in the world - Mount Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas! I will be joining the Penny Appeal Rohingya Emergency Response campaign which aims to help displaced Rohingya refugees by providing safe water and improving living conditions in the over populated, uninhabitable Bangladesh camps.
Yes, climbing Everest may sound like an extreme length to raise funds but there is nothing like taking on a big challenge which can make a big difference to those in need. The 17 day trek will involve me taking on extreme conditions and living with just the basics. This is a massive contrast to the luxuries I am used to but it isn’t even a drop in the ocean of what the Rohingya Refugees have had to give up and live through. Fear not, I will be physically and mentally preparing myself for the challenge and aim to make it to the top!
Please support by donating, sharing and helping me reach an ambitious (but possible) target of £4,500. Even as little as £5 can go a long way to help rehabilitate these victims of a mass genocide. Thank you for your support. :)
