Story
I have decided to do my bit by doing another Seaside24 charity challenge, which I am undertaking as part of my WWMD What would Mum do? fundraising legacy that I set up in memory of my Mum.
The challenge is to hike/run from Southport to Blackpool and back on foot in upto 24 hrs, subject to stops for food and breaks along the way.
I am going to likely set off at just after midnight, so the very start of World Mental Health Day on the Thursday the 10th Oct. This will mean I will get the night section out of the way early while I'm still reasonably alert.
This will allow me to post on social media throughout World Mental Health Day and raise awareness as I go. I will be on Facebook as Les Jackson and maybe Seaside24, but will mainly be on Instagram as Fitnesswithgru which will share to my Facebook when I remember to link it each post.
I am going to mostly hike with the odd little run to vary the strain on my legs so am looking at roughly 70% hiking and 30% running on the way out to Blackpool which is 35 miles, and if all else fails on the way back then 100% walking on the return to Southport.
I hope to be in Blackpool by 9am and back in Southport between 9pm and midnight.
At present a few friends may be joining me for some of it, which will be an encouragement, but I'm more than happy to just be out there on my own with my thoughts and no timetables.
I have created this challenge as a way to help raise funds and awareness on World Mental Health Day for Young Minds and mental health in general, as it is a cause very personal to me. It is something that affects 1 in 4 people, but often goes unmentioned through the stigma attached.
It is time we stepped forward and held our heads high as we honor and support the 1 in 4 among us, if not ourselves. Also to show that we are normal people living an almost normal everyday life, with it's day to day challenges and struggles and that we often are capable of incredible things..
