Story

All over!!!

I wanted to raise £1,000 by running the race in under 2 hours. The total is nearly £1,300 and I finished in 1 hour 46 mins.

JOB DONE!

Thanks to everyone who sponsored me - very much appreciated!

Update - had a go at running... I'm sure it was easier in 1986...

The factual bit:

I am running...

**THE LONDON Parks Half MARATHON**

on 10th October, 2010 for The Motor Neurone Disease Association!

Okay, it's only a half marathon, BUT that's still 13.1 miles (21,082,406.4 millimetres) of unnecessary torture.

The run starts from Hyde Park Corner, wiggles around Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Green Park and St James's Park before heading off to Westminster and Blackfriars Bridge... and then back to Hyde Park. It's like the London Marathon but with the grotty bits deleted. Click here to see a detailed route map

If running 21k isn’t enough to get your cash, I’m going to try and run it in under 2 hours (that’s pretty good going for an ex-heavy smoker in his 40s, in much worse shape than Eddie Izzard). PLUS, I promise to do minimal training so as to maximise the ordeal. That’s got to be worth a donation, eh? Go on, of course it is!!!

The cause:

The Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association is the only national organisation in England, Wales and Northern Ireland dedicated to the support of people with MND and those who care for them. Their mission is to fund and promote research to bring about an end to MND. Until then they will do all that they can to enable everyone with MND to receive the best care, achieve the highest quality of life possible, and die with dignity. Their vision is of a world free of MND.

In sponsoring me, money will go towards the 40 research projects currently being funded by the MND Association. These projects provide the very best research to help unlock the secrets of this disease.

The background bit:

Many people reading this will know our good friend Steve who was diagnosed with MND when just 39 years old. Since then, Steve has left me (and many others) awestruck with the way he's coping with this terminal illness. Being wheelchair-bound and with severely impaired speech, Steve is still game to leave his house in greater London and venture off to the city for a day out on his own(!)

He has left me humbled, and I would love to think that if I was ever faced with a similar ordeal I would handle it with the same courage that Steve has. Hats off to you Steve young man!!!

And to everyone else, in the slightly rude words of Sir Bob Geldof, " give us ya !%&*ing money"!!!
