Story

In September 2021, I will be doing a 100ft charity abseil as part of Nottingham Hospitals charity great fundraiser. I will be raising money for Ward E40 at QMC as it is so close to my heart, and it is really important to show some gratitude for the amazing job that such a small ward are doing.  Ward E40 is the children’s neurosurgical and neuro oncology ward at QMC and they are one of (if not the only) wards in the country that are able to look after children from a surgical and oncology way.
My nephew Larsen is my big inspiration. After being diagnosed with an extremely rare brain tumour, Larsen spent the majority of his time on ward E40. They initially cared for him post complex neurosurgery and cared for him through all of his side effects which included meningitis, hydrocephalus and throughout further surgery where he required a shunt and more. They further supported him through a high dose of chemotherapy and the love and kindness that was not only shown to him, but also to his brother, my sister and her husband was admirable. The nurses on E40 are not just doing a job. They were the most professional, kind, caring, bravest people that we have ever had the pleasure of meeting.  They didn’t just offer professional support, but they deeply cared for his wellbeing and showed him love at his most vulnerable points. My goal is to raise money to help support further training and development for the nurses. To give them an opportunity to attend conferences or anything else that will support the amazing work that they are doing, so that they can continue being the incredible professionals that they are; supporting children and families with brain tumours.
If Larsen was still with us, he himself would be fundraising too. During his treatment, he raised and amazing £3000 for the NUH big appeal by doing a slideathon. He was acknowledged for his amazing fundraising by having his name put on to the special Robin Hoods Heroes board- something that he was just SO proud of.

He was such an amazing human that throughout his treatment, at only 5 years old, he himself was able to show such kindness and also gratitude for the support that he was receiving and it was so important for him to give something back. This is a legacy that I want to continue for him and I hope to make him proud. He was a passionate, beautiful inspiration to anyone. He was my hero as well as many others. I also think that somewhere out there, he will be finding the idea of Aunty fern facing her fear of heights  quite humorous!
So please help me raise money for this INCREDIBLE ward and also in memory of the kindest soul that I was so lucky to be blessed with as a nephew, Larsen Roberts.
